Daredevil - The Devil's Turn - Ben Rosenthal

The following song used is called ‘Rose’s Turn’, and is sung by Bette Midler (albeit somewhat edited). Download it so you can feel the anger that rises from the lyrics, in order to get a better understanding of what I am trying to say in this script. Alternatively, download the cover that was shown on Glee.

1. Daredevil sitting on his throne in Shadowland, hours after killing Bullseye. His head is bowed, deep in thought.

Why did I do it?
What did it get me?

2. A montage of memories of those who are close to Matt, and how they have been hurt by him – Elektra slain by Bullseye, Karen Page killed by Bullseye, Foggy with multiple stab wounds, and Foggy revealing himself to be alive.

Scrapbooks full of me in the background.
Give 'em love and what does it get ya?

What does it get ya?
One quick look as each of 'em leaves you.

3. The Dark Avengers receiving accolades. Hawkeye/Bullseye is grinning widely.

All your life and what does it get ya?
Thanks a lot and out with the garbage,
They take bows and you're battin' zero.

4. Punching Bullseye hard on a rooftop in Hell’s Kitchen. This is the beginning of their fight in Shadowland #1.

Well, someone tell me, when is it my turn?
Don't I get a dream for myself?

5. Daredevil has brutally broken Bullseye’s arms.

Starting now it's gonna be my turn.
Gangway, world, get off of my runway!

6. Daredevil is sticking a sai into Bullseye’s chest, the same way Bullseye killed Electra.

Starting now I bat a thousand!
This time, boys, I'm taking the bows and

7. A close-up of Daredevil’s mask, focusing on the eyes. He is looking up slightly; his red eye covers a stark contrast to his black costume.

Everything’s coming up red...

  1. Ben, this is great stuff. The lyrics and panels work wonderfully in unison.

If I listened to anything besides crappy pop music, I'd give this a go myself!

  2. Wow, this is completely something different and I dig that you've gone a different way from anything I would have thought of.

It's a Glee/DD crossover, of sorts, and I don't even know what to make of it. I need to sit back and really see this as a page.

I think I kind of like it as only one page, not in an issue, not with story after it, just one page.

  3. It would probably have more punch if I knew the song but I still thought it was pretty cool.

  4. This comment has been removed by the author.

  5. A novel approach. I don't know the song but I like the plot behind it. It could have been a novelty, but I like the frustration behind the revenge, gives the whole thing a darker eddge emotionally as well as in terms of the violence.

  6. Funny, as I read that this was to go along with a song, I instantly though of a song called "The Devil's Taking Names" by The Lawrence Arms. It's funny because I think the lyrics KIND OF match up as well with your script.

    For example,

    Panel 1

    "Shall we dance?
    Or maybe just limp around?
These feet are cold and beat,
    and strangers to the ground."

    Panel 2

"The sound of the kick is arousing.
The couples are sweet in their love.
Tonight, we'll stagger up from the basement
or fall to our deaths from above."

    Panel 3

"You've got those moves and those eyes
I've got these shakes and bad breath."

    Panel 4

    "I've never tried that"

    Panel 5

    "I've never tried that,
    but I know I don't like it."

    Panel 6

"Or, maybe I do I'm just too weak to fight it."

    Panel 7

"Where are you? Where are you?
I hate to let 'em see me crying."

[Yeah, that last line's pretty emo, isn't it?"]

Anyway, if someone wants to listen what this song sounds like, you can go here (and this is where everyone realizes I listen to craptastic music)
