Silver Surfer - Herald of the Herald of Hiro-Kala - Max Barnard
The Premise: Galactus was prophesied to be the first herald of Hiro-Kala, one of the many children of Hulk. And so a thought occurred. What would it be like for the Silver Surfer to be the herald of a herald. And how d'ast confusing will that get?

Page 1 - 11 Panels
1-- A city full of unusual alien life looks up at the Silver Surfer, who is high above them all on his trademark surfboard, stretchign his hand towards them as he preaches the coming doom of his master. Some of the aliens are fleeing in panic, sobbing uncontrollably or fainting.
SPEECH BUBBLE/SILVER SURFER - LO AND HEAR THIS! I COME TO TELL YOU OF THE COMING OF MY MASTER, THE PLANET EATER GALACTUS! AND HE WILL COME TO HERALD THE COMING OF HIS MASTER, HIRO-KALA, THE DESTROYER OF WORLDS!
2-- Close-up on a select amount of the alien crowd, who now look very confused. One of them, a small child, has raised a limb, a la asking a question in school.
SPEECH BUBBLE/ALIEN KID - Um... Mr. Surfer, sir?
SPEECH BUBBLE/SILVER SURFER[OFF PANEL] - Speak, child.
3-- Close-up on Silver Surfer's blank expression.
SPEECH BUBBLE/ALIEN KID[OFF PANEL] - Why are you needed? Surely Mr. Galactus can do all the heralding himself.
4-- Same close-up, though now the Surfer's face is screwed up in thought.
5-- Same as 4.
SPEECH BUBBLE/SILVER SURFER - I... I must muse on this.
6-- The Silver Surfer flying away from the crowd, face still screwed up in confusion.
7-- The Silver Surfer flying across the cosmos at speed, planets and stars zooming past him. His face is STILL screwed up in the same expression.
8-- The Silver Surfer is now in front of Galactus (in his herald of Hiro-Kala form).
SPEECH BUBBLE/SILVER SURFER - Galactus! I come to you with a question!
SPEECH BUBBLE/GALACTUS - Speak, my herald.
9-- Close-up of Galactus' blank expression..
SPEECH BUBBLE/SILVER SURFER[OFF PANEL] - Why am I needed anymore?
10-- Same close-up as before, but now Galactus' face is screwed up in thought.
11-- Same as panel 10

Max - it's so kind of drawn out and longwinded, what with all the thinking and what have you, and then we get the 2 word denoument and it's perfect. It's brilliant build up and timing. I laughed quite loud on this one.

yeah it is kinda long. probably woulda worked better on two pages.
ReplyDeleteas for my plot hole... Hmmm... Not a clue. I'm gonna pretend that the kid has the initiative to call someone on a giant surfboard a surfer, or that the surfer's reputation preceeds him. either/or
Is Galactus seriously going to become the herald of Hiro-Kala?

honestly? no. I can't see it ever actually happening, but Scott Reed laid the ground for that potential future in his stunningly brilliant Realm of Kings: Son of Hulk mini
