Black Manta - Slice of Life - Ben Rosenthal

1. Aquaman sits on a couch in his underwater home. He reads “The Daily Bite” newspaper in front of his fire place. In the background we can see his front door.

SFX: KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK

2. Aquaman has opened the front door. From behind Aquaman, we see who was just knocking – it is Black Manta. However, he is wearing a white chef’s apron and a giant curly moustache to conceal his identity.

BLACK MANTA

Pizza for Mr Man.

3. Side shot of the two. Aquaman looks confused as he takes the pizza anyway.

AQUAMAN

I don’t recall ordering a pizza.

BLACK MANTA

Oh, it’s our new deal to promote our new Chilli Bomb Pizza – it will make your tastebuds ‘explode’.

Hehehe.

4. Outside of Aquaman’s house. Black Manta is in the foreground, visible from chest up. He covers his ears, awaiting a boom from the pizza bomp he just gave Aquaman. Through a window in Aquaman’s house we can see Aquaman enjoying a slice of pizza. He does not see Black Manta outside.

BLACK MANTA

Hope you enjoy my special dynamite topping, Aquaman.

What?

5. A pile of pizza boxes are on a motorcycle. The top one has “This one” written on it. Smoke is pouring out one of the pizza box’s side.

BLACK MANTA

I gave him the wrong-

6. A panel showing an explosion.

BOOM!

7. Same as Panel 4. Black Manta is charred black(er) from the explosion. He frowns. Through the window, Aquaman is rubbing his stomach with a wide grin on his face, oblivious to the explosion.

BLACK MANTA

-one.

  1. This page didn't do much for me if I'm honest Ben. Sorry man.

Although set up and the switch over gag in the end all works, for me it just felt like it had no relevance on the characters. Whilst the gag and set up work in their own right, it made little to no difference as to what characters were involved. I would have liked to have seen something that made better use of the character of Black Manta.

Also underwater fireplace? Now thats impressive.

p.s I would like to see Black Manta in that fake stash though. :)

  2. I have to side with Shaun on this one. You could switch any characters in here and the gags, dialogue, pacing and structure could all still apply.

    It made me laugh though!

  3. I liked the Wile E. Cotoye vibe here, it was a cool way to play the characters if (like me) you know very little about them.

If you did know stuff about them, then you should have bloody well gone with that, dude!

  4. I have no idea how Black Manta talks. I didn't have time to research him much this week. As soon as I saw him, I knew I just had to see him with a moustache. Must!

Oh, and I'm glad you picked up on the underwater fireplace :)

  5. I'll never say no to Loony Tunes-esque lunacy, especially when it involves nonsensical underwater highjinx.

"Pizza for Mr. Man" has probably been done before, but to hell with originally. I loved it nonetheless
